He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Kathy and a step-daughter Paula Hammond. Harvey is survived by his 2 sons: Scott Happel of Houston, Texas and Steven Happel of Dallas, Texas; 3 step-sons: Dennis (Mary) Ricker of Burton, Michigan, Douglas Hammond and Kevin Coburn both of Evansdale; a step-daughter Pamela (Jeff) Lawless of Waterloo; 12 grandchildren: Justin and Renee Ricker, Leslie and Lindie Hammond, Amanda Tomlinson, Tim Shumaker; James Swehla, Alex Hammond and Sarah, Casey, Hollie and Shelbie Lawless; 5 great-grandchildren: Kyler and Kayah Lyons, Graysyn Downing and Mason and Amaya Tomlinson; 2 brothers: Elden (Bonnie) Happel of Evansdale and Arlen (Mary Ann) Happel of Hudson and 3 sisters: Betty (Jerry) Walter of Cedar Falls, Jane (Bill) Hambly of Waterloo and Karen (Gerald) Gardner of Waterloo. Harvey will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Harvey Dean Happel was born February 8, 1939 in Denver, Iowa: the son of Elmer and Elaine (Thurm) Happel. He graduated from Waterloo East High School. Harvey married Connie Bettis in 1961, and they later divorced. He was united in marriage to Kathleen “Kathy” Schoonover Coburn on June 20, 1986 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua; she preceded him in death on December 3, 2012. Harvey was employed at John Deere in the foundry, retiring in 1989. He also helped his father build homes. Harvey then worked at Lawless & Son Trucking and Bill Doran Flowers. He enjoyed woodworking, puzzles camping and Nascar. Harvey most of all loved spending time with all of his grandchildren, he loved them dearly.
