Donald Lee Harmsen was born January 22, 1929 on a farm near Garwin, Iowa the son of Albert and Luella (Schultz) Harmsen. He attended country school and graduated from Garwin High School in the Class of 1947. He farmed with his father before being drafted into the Army in 1951 where he served in the Korean Conflict. He was united in marriage on July 1, 1951 to Janelle Philp and they made their home farming on a farm south of Dinsdale. Donald’s death came on Sunday, February 24, 2013 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa from a heart condition. He was a member of the Amity Presbyterian Church and Reinbeck American Post. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Janelle and his brother Lloyd and two grandsons, Scott and Michael. He is survived by his daughters, Vicki (Ron) Small of Indianapolis, Indiana and Nancy Harmsen of Reinbeck, sons, Gerald (Cheri) Harmsen of Waterloo, Iowa, James (Cecelia) of Reinbeck, Iowa, six grandchildren, five step grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 11 step great grandchildren.
